Diabetics ''ought to avoid electric blankets''
29/12/2009
There is a major health risk for diabetics if they decide to use an electric blanket to keep themselves warm at night, according to a bed expert.
Karen Youso of the Star Tribune commented on the issue of staying comfortable and warm in the winter months, a problem which faces countless people during cold spells and one which has forced many to use an electric blanket.
She said that as with all electrical goods, such blankets are liable to malfunctioning and presents a major health hazard to those insensitive to heat.
One such group which Ms Youso picks up on is those with diabetes, for which she recommends that an electric blanket should be used to warm the bed prior to getting in, as individuals with the condition may not feel the warmth and thus possibly burn themselves during the night.
The dangers of electric blankets were recently highlighted when one inhabitant of Jersey had a narrow escape from a malfunctioning one, which set on fire as they lay underneath.
