The importance of travelling safely has been highlighted by a recent occurrence in a Worcestershire town after a mattress nearly caused a major accident.
A Ford Transit tipper truck carrying a double mattress had shed its load on the Worcester-bound lane of the A451, ditching it into the path of a female driver in a Volvo who has to screech off in a different direction to avoid the hazard, the Kidderminster Shuttle revealed.
The driver of the Transit didn''t stop, however, meaning there is now a hunt for the vehicle''s owner which has a distinctive sky blue cab and black drop-sides.
PC Lee Halford, who is investigating the case, said: "Fortunately, no-one was hurt but this could have resulted in a serious collision and injuries, particularly if there had been a motorbike or bicycle following the truck."
Appealing for witnesses of the strange event, the policeman told the paper: "If anyone knows her identity, saw what happened or noticed the truck before or afterwards, then I would urge them to get in touch."
Last month, Robert Caton, a 50-year-old from Andover in Hampshire, admitted his crime of ploughing his car into the side of his local Tesco over an undelivered mattress in an act which completely destroyed two cashier check-outs.
