Sleep disorders ''linked to irregular heartbeat'' By Matt Gardner

Individuals who suffer from sleep-related breathing problems are at an increased risk of suffering from irregular or abnormal heartbeats, according to a new study.

Scientists at the Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine in Cleveland researched the health of 2,911 men who had sleep-related issues between 2003 and 2005.

It was discovered that those who had suffered from short or paused breaths during their time asleep in bed were much more likely to suffer from such heart issues.

The correlation was also clear between worse cases of sleep issues and more serious heartbeat problems, leading researchers to believe that brain signal malfunctions were not controlling breathing muscles as efficiently as was necessary.

It is hoped that further studies will be carried out to look into sleep-disordered breathing on cardiac outcomes.

Earlier this month, a study by the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine found that women are able to get a better quality of sleep when they are in a loving relationship with a significant other.
