The bed is such a prized possession to Brits that a large number of us openly admit to missing our mattresses when we are on holiday, according to a new survey.
It was discovered in a recent poll by trivago.co.uk that 41 per cent of the company''s respondents named their own bed as the one thing they missed the most while on their jollies elsewhere in the world.
The desire for one''s mattress was well ahead of other personal issues such as missing the fact most people do not speak English (13 per cent), not being able to watch soaps or other British TV programmes (six per cent) and being unable to go to British pubs (four per cent).
A cultural divide was immediately drawn with other countries, with 27 per cent of Italians missing their bidet and 38 per cent of Dutch people not missing a single thing when away from their homeland, making it the least homesick nation in the survey.
Mattresses were the central feature of Knaresborough''s annual bed race, with the Yorkshire Post reporting that a time of 12 minutes and 59 seconds was enough to give this year''s title to the Harrogate Harriers.
