Insomnia ''a symptom not a condition''
24/10/2008
Insomnia is not a disease in itself but often a symptom of another condition or illness, an expert suggests.
Dr Wei, of the In Nature organisation, writing for the Thai Marathon blog, explains that stress can be a major contributor to a lack of sleep.
Everyday worries can leave a person lying awake and going over issues in their head, the practitioner continues.
"Do not fight it. If you cannot feel sleepy, get out of bed, go for a walk and eat something sweet and light. Read a book or listen to music," the doctor recommends.
Earlier this month, the University of Arizona''s college of medicine, alongside Harvard Medical School, published a study in the Journal of Clinical Sleep Medicine suggesting that fatty foods are linked to sleep apnoea, a condition which prevents people from enjoying quality rest.
The condition can case obstructive snoring issues, which leads to disturbed sleep by blocking the airways in the throat for a few seconds at regular intervals in the night.
