Good quality sleep ''could aid weight loss''
A healthy sleeping pattern should form part of any weight loss plan.
According to a commentary published in the Canadian Medical Association Journal, good quality rest in a
bed should be advised alongside diet and exercise.
Dr Jean-Phillippe Chaput of the
Children's Hospital of Eastern Ontario Research Institute and Dr Angelo Tremblay from Laval University in Quebec said: "An accumulating body of evidence suggests that sleeping habits should not be overlooked when prescribing a weight-reduction programme to a patient with obesity."
Instead, the experts want to see slumber included as part of "lifestyle package" that usually focus on eating properly and physical activity.
It comes after the pair completed research that found people enrolled in a weight loss programme lost fat if total sleep time and quality of sleep improved.
And the growing understanding of this issue can be seen by the fact the Canadian Obesity Network recently included adequate sleep in its new set of obesity management tools for physicians.
