One in ten couples sleep separately, says survey

As couples in the UK lead increasingly independent lives, a survey has revealed as many as one in ten now sleep not only in separate beds, but different rooms entirely.

The research, conducted by insurance company esure, also found that seven per cent of Brits have a separate bathroom from their partner and 18 per cent watch TV or read books in separate rooms.

The company's research found that 12 per cent of people have their own room which they do not allow their partner to spend time in - with ten per cent of men having a games room and four per cent of women having a powder room.

Nikki Sellers, head of home underwriting at esure, said: "They say that 'absence makes the heart grow fonder' and this may be the case."

Earlier this month, the Sleep Council launched a new campaign encouraging couples to continue to share a bed.
