Nick Clegg reveals bedtime reading habits

Nick Clegg has revealed that his bedtime routine involves reading a few pages of a novel before he goes to sleep.

The deputy prime minister told Easy Living magazine that he reads in bed "religiously" and believes settling down with a book is the perfect way to relax at the end of the day.

"I cannot think of a time when I have finished the day without reading just a few pages of a novel," Clegg explained.

"There's no more wonderful escape at the end of any day."

The 45-year-old Liberal Democrat leader also revealed that he attempted to write his own work of fiction during his early 20s, but dismissed the effort as "shockingly bad".

He said he would like to pen a novel in the style of South Africa's Nobel Prize-winning author JM Coetzee, whose books include Age of Iron, The Master of Petersburg and Disgrace.

Clegg named Autumn of the Patriarch by Gabriel Garcia Marquez and Fyodor Dostoevsky's Crime and Punishment among his favourite books.
