Are all wood products and packaging FSC certified by your supplier's and is Silentnight FSC approved?

Reply from our Silentnight Expert:

All Silentnight Beds and Headboards are now made of FSC certified timber.

2011 is the International Year of Forests and so what could be more appropriate than for the UK’s leading bed manufacturer, Silentnight Group, to now be officially certified by the Forest Stewardship Council (FSC).

The FSC Chain Of Custody label guarantees that the timber or fibre used in the divans and headboards comes from FSC-certified forests, where trees harvested are replaced or allowed to regenerate naturally.

In addition to forest certification, the FSC certified Chain of Custody element promises to track the timber through every stage in the supply chain from the forest to the final user, to guarantee that the item is genuinely FSC.

The Group was granted FSC certification across its entire portfolio - Silentnight Beds, Sealy, Rest Assured, Layezee Beds and Pocket Spring Bed Company and across all three manufacturing sites – demonstrating the Group’s commitment to the environment.  Producing over half a million divans and headboards annually across the Group, this is an important element in ensuring their manufacturing process becomes increasingly sustainable and is part of the Company’s longer term and growing strategic commitment to CSR and eco issues.

All products under the Group will carry the FSC Mix logo, giving consumers piece of mind in the knowledge that they are not contributing to global forest destruction. FSC is a market-based initiative which also ensures better conditions for the forest and the people whose livelihoods depend on it.

Neal Mernock, CEO of Silentnight Group, said: “As a group, we are not only committed to providing the very best products at the most affordable prices possible, but we also strive to be as environmentally friendly as we can.

“The FSC certification outwardly demonstrates our responsibility to the environment and to those people directly affected, allowing our consumers to have a clear conscience when purchasing our products.

As the UK’s biggest bed manufacturer we see it as essential that we lead the industry in our environmental policies. This is just the latest in a series of major initiatives which we shall be announcing this year,  that we hope our competitors will eventually follow”

FSC certified forests must be managed to the highest environmental, social and economic standards. Trees that are harvested are replanted or allowed to regenerate naturally, but it does not stop there. The forests must also be managed with due respect for the environment, the wildlife and the people who live and work in them. This is what makes the FSC system unique and ensures that a forest is well-managed, from the protection of indigenous people‘s rights to the methods of felling trees.

The Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) is an international, non-governmental organisation dedicated to promoting responsible management of the world‘s forests. It was founded in 1993 in response to public concern about deforestation and demand for a trustworthy wood-labelling scheme. FSC has developed a system of forest certification and product labelling that allows consumers to identify wood and wood-based products from well-managed forests.
