I can go to sleep but I always wake up in the middle of my sleep I am never able to stay asleep for 8 hours like I use to. Early January this year a noise outside woke me up, I don’t know if it was neighbours or people passing I don’t know but the noise woke me up and since then I haven’t been able to sleep through the night.  The only time I am able to is if I don’t get much sleep the night before. I did sleep at least 8 hours, 2 nights ago and I go to bed at the same time every night. What should I do if I wake up, go back to sleep or just get up straight away?

Reply from our Silentnight Expert:

Firstly, we would suggest that you speak to your GP to make sure there is no medical reason for your disturbed sleep.

The quality of sleep is as important as how much sleep you get.  Worrying about not having a full 8 hours sleep may actually be contributing to the cause.  Do something relaxing just before bedtime so that you don't dwell on worries.

It may be time for a new mattress if:  You wake up with aches and pains, which wear off as the day progresses; you are not sleeping as well as you did a year ago; You enjoy better sleep somewhere other than your own bed; Your mattress shows signs of visible wear and tear.

After the first year the bed will start to loose its comfort or support that it had from when it was new. This will continue year after year. The only thing is that you will not notice this because your body will adjust to the bed. It is only when the bed or mattress completely becomes unbearable to sleep on that most people will replace it.

Again, we are not medical experts and it would not be appropriate for us to advice you whether or not to get up or try to go back to sleep.
